The first time Sevilla beat Manchester United it was Jose Mourinho who had to face the music.
His lavishly assembled side failed to produce yet again as they were shocked at Old Trafford in the last 16 of the Champions League back in 2018. The Spaniards secured a 2-1 victory, much to the surprise of many, but Mourinho wasn’t among those to be stunned at Old Trafford.
The Special One had made his name in Manchester but was struggling to restore them to the success of yesteryear. After his latest setback, rather than give the generic spiel about their disappointment and going again, he referenced United’s continued shortcomings.
Mourinho’s venture into the last 16 had only been bettered once since their 2011 final appearance – that came in 2014 when they were beaten by Bayern Munich in the last eight. In those seven years, they’d failed to make it out of groups and even failed to qualify at all for the competition.
As a result, the Portuguese boss said: “I sat in this chair twice in the Champions League after knocking out Manchester United [in the last 16] at home, at Old Trafford. In this chair with Porto [in 2004] and Real Madrid [in 2013], they are out both times. It is not something new for the club.”
Clearly, he felt mediocrity in Europe was fairly common. Mourinho, who was in the midst of his final full campaign at Old Trafford, also claimed: “I don’t have regrets. I did my best, the players did their best. We tried, we lost and that is football.”
Just days later, in a press conference, he would launch his famous “football heritage” rant that laid bare United’s failings prior to his arrival. Seemingly absolving himself of much blame given he’d simply followed what had come before him under the likes of Louis van Gaal, David Moyes and – towards the end – Sir Alex Ferguson. The Special One is still the last man to deliver a European trophy to Old Trafford.
Mourinho was widely criticised for his outburst, which also detailed United’s recent failings domestically. It was his assessment of their European exploits that hit a cord with some: “The last time Manchester United won the Champions League, which didn’t happen a lot of times, was in 2008. The final was 2011.”
Since those comments Sevilla have knocked them out of the Europa League in 2020, en route to winning it themselves. Now it is the competition’s specialists who again sit between them and a place in the semi-finals.
Mourinho’s rant has been somewhat justified by the club’s exploits. Barring a last-16 comeback against PSG, secured in dramatic fashion by a late Marcus Rashford penalty, United have continued to underwhelm, so much so that Thursday night football has become all too common.
In the first year without the self-styled Special One, Solskjaer led the Red Devils to the last four in the Europa League. The following year they failed to step up in a winner takes all Champions League group clash against RB Leipzig, which saw them resigned to the Europa League once more. Villarreal would deny them in the final a year later after a lengthy penalty shootout that saw all 22 men step up.
In Solskjaer’s final season, which would only last a matter of months before Ralf Rangnick came in, the club continued to make hard work of a group that, based on resources, they should breeze. Last-gasp wins over Villarreal and Atalanta exposed flaws that have led to bigger problems.
Atletico Madrid would prove to be far too strong in the last 16 as they came and did a job at Old Trafford against the Red Devils, securing a 2-1 aggregate win as United failed to really fire a shot.
This term Erik ten Hag, who has made impressive strides forward, has again been dealt the Thursday night football card. Spanish opposition have not proved to United’s liking in recent years and Sevilla will again be their obstacle.
Harry Maguire said after their most recent defeat to the LaLiga side: “Losing is not acceptable. Getting to semi-finals isn’t acceptable.” Nowadays reaching a European semi-final for those on the red side of Manchester has become something of a novelty.
Hailed as a European powerhouse due to their honours board, financial might and global appeal. United now need to start acting like one on the pitch, a mission that continues with Sevilla on Thursday night and getting themselves back on Europe’s top table – not UEFA’s secondary competition.
Mourinho’s remarks appeared five years ago to be a defence mechanism but, as he’s proved with comments he made on Dele Alli, the Special One sometimes says what people don’t like to hear. It is up to his former side to prove him wrong.
